Prevention of Radicalization and Violent Extermism
Few studies are specifically focused on the prevention of radicalization.
In a context where preventive measures have to be increased, it is essential to be equipped with analysis tools to better understand and act in terms of prevention. With this objective, the UNESCO Chair on the Prevention of Radicalization and Violent Extremism (in French) was created. The research team is therefore working on both knowledge development related to the prevention of violent radicalization and better coordination between research and action in the field.
With this research chair, the Université de Sherbrooke is directly contributing to the UNESCO’s mission statement, “to build peace through international cooperation in Education, the Sciences, and Culture.”
Four general objectives make up its mission:
- Identify and establish a network of poles and structures of expertise to facilitate the dissemination and exchange of knowledge related to preventing radicalization and violent extremism. This objective is based on a compared, multidisciplinary, and North-South-South perspective, ensuring essential alignment among stakeholders with the best practices in the field, in particular within school environments and communities.
- Establish a program of research-action focused on preventing radicalization. This objective will make it possible to identify exemplary practices to guide policies and programs on prevention.
- Support capacity building, especially in the South, through a) mutual exchange, academic and professional training and development in this field and b) direct support to field initiatives that prioritize youth participation, particularly in the school and community environment.
- Ensure awareness, visibility, and knowledge transfer with the public and media.
