ACELP Technology

ACELP, which stands for “Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction,” is used every day in more than 95% of the world’s cell phones, which accounts for more than 6 billion users.

This technology was developed at the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS), which through its research group on speech and audio, includes some of the world’s best researchers in digital signal processing.

Thanks to the partnerships the institution established with VoiceAge, Sipro Lab Telecom, and a number of telecommunications titans in Europe, Asia, and North America, ACELP technology has generated $225M in revenue for the Université de Sherbrooke and its researchers-inventors, in the form of research funding, royalties, and dividends.

Research on speech and audio primarily focuses on digital signal processing, more specifically speech processing. Work is always carried out in line with industry needs, both in terms of standards (ITU, ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2, etc.) and proprietary applications. The UdeS’s mission is to remain a world leader in the field of signal compression and enhancement.
