To develop an understanding of the sound structure of language and of the phonological rules and features that govern English pronunciation.
Basic principles of phonetics (production, acoustics, and perceptions of speech). Phonemes and minimal pairs. Phonological rules and features of English. Prosodic events such as phrasing and intonation. Contrasts and comparisons with the phonology of other languages, particularly French.
