Contenu
Within the context of the later Roman Empire, this seminar course will focus on the disasters and crises that tested the resilience of the people who witnessed them, and of the empire itself. We will learn about natural and human-caused disasters, including earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, pandemics, famines, military disasters, and political violence, including the decline of the western Roman Empire and the first outbreak of bubonic plague during 6th century CE. We will read primary sources (in translation) as well as modern scholarship.
