To understand the cognitive processes underlying reading comprehension and supporting a deep understanding of disciplinary content. To evaluate and to apply cognitive strategy instruction in supporting student reading.

Contenu

This course explores how cognitive processes shape reading comprehension and disciplinary learning. Participants will examine how reading and thinking happen in the brain, the role of mental models, and the habits of mind required for deep disciplinary understanding. Through the study of threshold concepts and cognitive strategies, participants will design instructional approaches that help learners access complex ideas. Emphasis will be placed on integrating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and leveraging tools to support strategic thinking, reading, and learning.
