Ecocritical approaches to literature will include questions about nature/culture, the Anthropocene, posthumanism, animals, dystopias, and indigenous perspectives.

Contenu

In looking at how land and ecology is represented in texts, an ecocritical approach aims to understand the psychological, aesthetic, political, cultural, and social construction of “nature”, from its early manifestations as garden/paradise to contemporary visions of global collapse due to anthropogenic climate change. The texts studied in this seminar could include early nature poetry, cli-fi, dystopian literature, digital environmental mapping, conceptual art and poetry, film, scientific findings, and virtual reality. Theories of the environment include ecofeminist approaches, slow violence, hyperobjects, animal studies, indigenous science, and political theory.
