365 Days to Celebrate a Century of Quantum Science
The Quantum Institute (IQ) of the University of Sherbrooke is part of the celebrations for the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IQST).
Proclaimed for 2025 by the United Nations (UN), this event marks a century since the first articles describing quantum mechanics, a discipline that has continuously transformed our understanding of the world and stimulated major scientific breakthroughs.
As part of the IQ Year (AIQ), the goal of the Institut Quantique and its members is to highlight recent breakthroughs in the fascinating field of quantum sciences and to raise public awareness of its crucial role in addressing the challenges of the 21st century, particularly those related to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Under the auspices of UNESCO and with the support of a dozen prestigious organizations, such as the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics and the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, the AIQ promises a year filled with discoveries and dialogue.
The Institut Quantique Commitment
The Quantum Institute aims to play a leading role in this mission of education and outreach. Throughout 2025, a varied program will captivate both newcomers and enthusiasts. Some of the planned initiatives include:
- Popularization Capsules: Accessible content throughout the year will aim to demystify key aspects of quantum science.
- Seminar Series: For the more curious, five in-depth lectures will revisit the foundational texts of quantum physics.
- Flagship Events: Well-established events will also return in grand fashion. Whether at SherHack 2025 or the 24-Hour Science event, the IQ will seize these opportunities to promote the importance of quantum in various contexts.
- In May, the Théâtre du Renard will present a play titled The Rebellion of the Minuscule: Quantum Physics and Object Theater. This original work, presented at the Cultural Center of the University of Sherbrooke, will immerse the audience in the captivating world of the infinitesimally small. A performance for school groups will take place during the day, and another for the general public in the evening.
An Artistic Approach
To illustrate what happens in the IQ labs and broaden perspectives on quantum physics, a photographic project in collaboration with the Jacques-Cartier Arts and Culture Committee will offer an artistic interpretation of this complex science. This initiative reflects the IQ's commitment to making science accessible and inspiring for all, bringing it out of laboratories and into the public sphere.
Engaging the public with quantum and sharing this science has always been a significant source of pride for the IQ community; the global outreach movement of AIQ represents an even greater opportunity to continue this mission.
The Importance of Dialogue around Quantum Physics
While celebrating a century of research this year, quantum physics continues to captivate with the vast array of discoveries that are yet to be made. Quantum physics promises much on paper, but its applications and functioning are often subjects of widespread misunderstanding. In this sense, the Institut Quantique takes advantage of the Quantum Year to open discussions and democratize this little-known subject—yet one with very real implications.
Here are some of the topics to be addressed throughout 2025:
- Raising awareness of technological and economic issues: Several innovations, particularly in data processing, molecular simulation, and system optimization, could redefine industrial and economic sectors. This new reality inevitably creates new opportunities, but also challenges for businesses and workers. Informing the public fosters a better understanding of the economic transformations ahead.
- Encouraging education and scientific careers: The development of quantum technologies requires a skilled workforce. By raising public awareness, particularly among young people, about this revolution, we can encourage them to pursue careers in the industry, thus strengthening national competitiveness and innovation.
- Preparing society for the ethical and social implications: The introduction of any innovative technology into the market brings with it ethical questions that require collective awareness. Dialogues on the societal and ethical impacts of emerging technologies can contribute to balanced and tailored regulations.
- Stimulating public and private investment: Educating the public on quantum technologies can drive strategic investments in research and development, particularly in countries wishing to play a leading role in this revolution.
- Combating misinformation and unfounded fears: New technologies often provoke fears and misunderstandings. Clear communication about the quantum revolution can help prevent misinformation, foster social acceptance, and minimize unnecessary resistance.
- Ensuring inclusion and equity: Without proper awareness, only a few privileged actors might benefit from technological advancements. Effective communication helps democratize access to these technologies and their benefits, thus reducing the risk of deepening technological and economic inequalities.
The upcoming quantum revolution is not just the domain of researchers or specialists; it concerns society as a whole. Informing people now helps anticipate the impacts and build a future where this technology is used in a beneficial and inclusive way.
Accelerating the Quantum Revolution
The field of quantum science and technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the future, and the AIQ offers the perfect opportunity to open the dialogue on this fascinating and promising field. While many people might immediately associate the word "quantum" with computers, this science aspires to much more. Quantum physics goes beyond computers: it opens up unforeseen horizons to tackle global challenges such as climate change, improving energy systems, advancing healthcare, and much more. However, for this potential to become a reality, it is essential to educate, inspire, and cultivate talent.
The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology offers a unique opportunity to engage society in this scientific adventure. In 2025, the Institut Quantique commits to continuing to shine a light on this discipline, with the aim of building a future where science and sustainable development go hand in hand.
