Foundations of College Teaching

Designed specifically for college teaching, the 15‑credit Graduate Certificate in College Teaching, offered in English, is grounded in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) approach.

The SoTL approach encourages educators to view teaching as a reflective and evidence-informed practice. It invites participants to ask meaningful questions about student learning, examine their own teaching closely, and use these insights to grow as thoughtful, effective college teachers.

This certificate provides a strong foundation for educators who wish to strengthen their professional skills and deepen their understanding of teaching at the college level.

In particular, elements of reflective practice include:

  • a commitment to the teaching profession and to the ongoing development of professional practice
  • designing and implementing learning activities that align with program goals, are grounded in sound pedagogical principles, and can be adapted to changing contexts
  • maintaining up-to-date disciplinary knowledge related to the subject taught and the college program involved
  • integrating information and communication technologies effectively into professional practice
