Waiver of Higher Tuition for International Students

International students may be eligible for a waiver of the higher tuition fees. Most of these waivers come from the Quebec government, through agreements with partner countries and additional waivers granted to Quebec's higher-education institutions. They allow international students to pay the same tuition fees as Quebec students.

Waivers — Countries with an Agreement

The Quebec government has agreements with some 40 countries and a few organizations whereby students who come to the province to study are exempt from paying the higher tuition fees. The number of waivers available and the levels of study vary according to country. Students must first contact the program in their home country to determine if they are eligible. If your country does not have a cooperative agreement, see below the procedures for applying.

For more information, see the Exemptions from Differential Tuition Fees page on the Quebec government website.

Université de Sherbrooke's Tuition-Waiver Program

Beginning with in the winter 2021 trimester, all candidates enrolled in a research doctorate program will receive a waiver of the higher tuition fee for all trimesters in which they are enrolled in full-time study. It is important to note that elective educational activities do not qualify for the waiver of the higher tuition fees.

Doctoral students, however, must first apply for a waiver from their country of citizenship if it has an agreement with the Quebec government.

This is an enhanced waiver of the flat rate added to the tuition fees granted to the Université de Sherbrooke by the Quebec government. The Université de Sherbrooke is pleased to let all international doctoral students share in this.

Thus, all international students enrolled in a regular research-based doctoral program  at the Université de Sherbrooke will pay tuition fees equivalent to those of Quebec students. This waiver program is designed to attract the best talent to the Université de Sherbrooke and to better support them in making a success of their doctoral studies.

Some students enrolled in a master's program may be eligible for a waiver of the higher tuition fees. Details on the procedures, eligibility criteria, and programs of study can be found in the section for master's students and will be updated regularly.

Value of the UdeS Waiver

Waivers of the higher tuition fees allow international students to pay the same tuition fees as Quebec students. Its value is equivalent to the amount normally required. The waiver is paid by adjusting the billing for each academic trimester. Before leaving their home country, international students must ensure that they have the necessary financial resources to support themselves for the entire duration of their studies.
