UdeS awarded another record STARS certification score
The Université de Sherbrooke again at the top for its commitment to sustainable development
Sherbrooke, le 21 mai 2025 – The Université de Sherbrooke has again bolstered its international position in sustainable development thanks to a second consecutive highest rating in the world from the STARS ranking for higher education institutions. With a record score of 93.20%, UdeS has retained its Platinum rating—the highest possible distinction for this certification—for a third time, an achievement that confirms its exemplary commitment to a more sustainable future.
This exceptional performance attests not only to its leadership in sustainable development but also to the concrete impact of a collective commitment that is interwoven across all university activities, such as governance, training, research, operations, community services, and social engagement.
Outstanding performance from a collective commitment
UdeS has been ramping up its structural initiatives for many years, from a training centre on the environment and sustainable development to Quebec’s first vice-rectorship for sustainable development and a neutral carbon footprint for direct emissions and indirect emissions from imported energy.
Other examples of flagship projects include the Parc-du-Mont-Bellevue university nature reserve, which is a true ecosystem of learning that protects nature while letting students discover its wonders, as well as an organizational health index to uphold long-term community health at UdeS.
More than a goal, sustainable development is baked into UdeS’s DNA. Whether through the incorporation of environmental issues into the curricula, the Fiers d’être verts green ambassadors network, or the nearly 200 student and institutional projects underway, the entire community has a hand in putting sustainability first.
“This recognition reflects a strong collective commitment that is deeply rooted in our culture. Sustainable development is not a destination; it’s a journey. This STARS certification is a springboard that will propel us further—together—toward an even greener, more inclusive, and more responsible future,” said Denyse Rémillard, Deputy Rector and Vice-President, Administration and Sustainable Development.
Awarded by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), an independent body, STARS certification recognizes institutions that incorporate sustainable development across their entire mission. This international honour is an addition to the Université de Sherbrooke’s 14th spot in the UI GreenMetric ranking, which evaluates 1477 universities on their environmental and social practices.
