Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities 2025

UdeS makes another strong showing on list of major Canadian research institutions

Sherbrooke, le 04 décembre 2025 – The Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) is proud to announce that it has once again ranked high on Research Infosource’s prestigious list of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities. As indicated in this annual report on university research activities, UdeS showed remarkable 19% growth in research income between 2023 and 2024 for the second-highest increase in the country.

UdeS has maintained its 11th strong position among major research universities with total research income of $285.9 million. It also recorded a 16.4% increase in funding from non-governmental sources, which demonstrates its commitment to a diverse range of organizations—from NPOs and SMEs to municipalities and large corporations. Thanks to its innovative partnership model, UdeS promotes collaborative research that benefits both its partners and its academic community. This distinctive approach allows the university to tackle social and environmental challenges facing the region and the province.

“UdeS has a hand in so many benefits for society, for example, when we win battles against a disease, when a new technology makes our lives easier, or when we find new hope for a more sustainable future. Our fundamental and applied research communities are known for making society’s most pressing issues a core part of their work, and they do so by aligning expertise and building partnerships. This approach has culminated in our excellent ranking in Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities.” — Professor Anne Lessard, Vice-President, Research, and Vice-President, International Relations.

Driving innovation toward a sustainable future

UdeS also ranked third nationally for growth in scientific publications related to climate change, which speaks to its interdisciplinary, integrated, and collaborative approach to sustainable development. Its ongoing commitment to embedding sustainability across all aspects of its mission and operations has earned it the prestigious STARS Platinum certification.

Sustained growth in research at UdeS has translated into tangible progress in addressing major societal challenges. Thanks to its knowledge mobilization and innovative interdisciplinary programs, UdeS can generate a real impact by applying responsible innovation principles and getting its scientific community dynamically involved in transformational initiatives.

UdeS and the CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS: Canadian leaders in their fields

Another way that UdeS stands out in research is through its strategic collaborations, particularly with the Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS) de l’Estrie – CHUS, which this year ranked 17th on the list of Canada’s Top 40 Research Hospitals. As long-standing partners, UdeS and the CIUSSS de l'Estrie – CHUS inspire each other in their mutual pursuit of excellence. Together, they are pushing the boundaries of innovation through pivotal projects at the Centre de recherche du CHUS, the Research Centre on Aging (CdRV), and the Institut universitaire de première ligne en santé et services sociaux. This close partnership—bolstered by the dedication of UdeS researcher communities and the CIUSSS teams—shows how far we can go when we build success together.
