Additional Sources of Financial Assistance

Funding sources offered on campus

Each faculty and/or department provides financial assistance to students already enrolled in their master’s and doctoral programs. International students enrolled at the UdeS are also eligible. The allocation criteria for these scholarships vary and are managed by each faculty or department. The best way to obtain relevant information is to contact the Graduate Studies Secretariat of their faculty or its equivalent.

A number of professors include amounts in their grant applications to financially support students participating in their research. This support may be in the form of a scholarship or a salary. You may verify this with the professor directly.

Teaching loads and research or teaching assistant jobs are other examples of funding as salary. These jobs help generate income support for studies. They are also a relevant training supplement that may help integrate learning. However, at no time may the research or teaching assistant job hinder the completion of studies. Address these questions with professors to find out about the options offered in your discipline.

Mitacs is a non-profit Canadian organization that financially supports academic research through various partnership programs for industrial and social innovation. This organization helps students develop their career, network, and professional skills while conducting their graduate research project.

Mitacs creates links across all disciplines between academic research and the needs of society and the Canadian economy. It provides financial support for collaborations between universities and private organizations, whether for profit or non-profit. It offers four programs for final-year undergraduate students to PhD students.

MITACS ACCELERATE (master's, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellowship)

Through the Mitacs Accelerate internship program, graduate and postdoctoral students may work for businesses or organizations that need their expertise. Equipped with all the latest tools, techniques, and innovations, interns and fellows take a fresh look at the research issue posed by the partner business.

  • The program is open to graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, whether they be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or international students.
  • 4-Month internship units (several internships available).
  • Up to $15,000 per internship (matching funds from the partner business or organization and Mitacs).
  • Students spend at least 50% of the internship with the partner organization or business and the remainder with the university, where they work on their project under the guidance of the supervising professor.
  • The Mitacs‐Accelerate internships may fall within any academic discipline or industrial sector and involve a wide range of fields (manufacturing, technical innovation, operational processes, information technologies, social sciences, design, etc.).
  • No deadline: Applications are accepted throughout the year.
  • The application process is simple, quick, and easy. Applications are generally processed within six to eight weeks.
  • Proposals are not assessed as part of a competition but rather a case-by-case basis.
  • Field experience: Interns apply their knowledge and innovative ideas to real challenges.
  • The academic work of interns is compensated through a grant.

MITACS ELEVATION (postdoctoral fellowship)

Two-year program for postdoctoral fellows, in which participants have the opportunity to undertake and manage a research project related to the industry. Throughout the program, fellows receive direct practical R&D training through research collaboration between the business and the university, as well as leadership training and business acumen.

Postdoctoral fellows also fine-tune their communication, leadership, and management skills, in addition to acquiring significant business skills through the unique range of training workshops and activities provided by the Elevate program.

These skills will prove very useful to lead major research projects throughout their career.

  • Two calls for proposals per year.
  • Fellows receive a stipend/salary or at least $50,000 per year.
  • Partner organizations provide $30,000 and Mitacs provides $25,000 for a total research grant of $55,000 per year.
  • This includes support for fellows and up to $5,000 in research costs for equipment, additional research personnel, conference travel costs, and publishing costs.

MITACS GLOBALINK (international research projects)

The Globalink program features a research scholarship program between Canada and several other international partners to support research trips abroad.

  • Program open to final-year undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Certain scholarships are for students enrolled in Canadian universities and others are for international students interested in studying in Canada.
  • Projects selected are for at least 12 weeks and at the most 24 weeks, and are conducted abroad.
  • Mitacs will provide CA$5,000 to the candidates selected to cover their travel and accommodation costs, direct research expenses, and allowance. A higher amount may be allocated for certain projects. The scholarship will be paid as a research subsidy to the supervisor of the home university.
  • There is also an initiative to conduct research in a business abroad. This grant is for $15,000.

The student must:

  • Have found a member of the teaching faculty of their home university to supervise the project and administer the funds;
  • Have found a supervisor in the host university from the teaching faculty of an accredited university in one of Mitacs’ partner countries.

MITACS TRAINING (professional development workshops)

Mitacs Training workshops provide professional development to help graduate students prepare for their career. These workshops are offered throughout the year in universities across Canada, including the Université de Sherbrooke.

The program is designed to develop skills in four key areas. Each workshop focuses on one or several of the following skills:

  • Leadership and management;
  • Communications and relationship building;
  • Personal and professional management;
  • Entrepreneurship.

These workshops are free and open to all graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Mitacs Step features a small-group interactive learning environment, facilitated by industry and marketplace professionals.

This program offers funding to attract and retain top-tier postdoctoral talent, both nationally and internationally. The funding allocated enables them to develop their leadership potential and positions them for success as research leaders of tomorrow. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the economic, social, and scientific development of Canada.

Because of their particular status or under collaboration agreements concluded between the Government of Québec and several countries, certain international students are exempt from additional tuition fees. All related information is provided on the admissions page of the website.
