Financing your Studies

Financial Help

Financial help to international students is limited. Ideally, candidates should make sure they have sufficient financial resources to complete their studies. However, the Quebec and Canadian governments, along with various organizations, offer scholarships to students from some countries to enable them to continue their studies or research in Canada. You may also be admissible to the same tuition fees as Quebec students owing to agreements between the Government of Quebec and certain countries.

Information on these programs is available through the department responsible for graduate studies in your country. Funds are also allocated to help students integrate into a certain number of research teams. Paid teaching or research assistantships are sometimes available. Moreover, faculties offer merit-based scholarships.

Part-time Work

To finance their education, most Quebec students combine part-time work and studies. The Student Job Centre manages a bank of regular and temporary jobs offered on campus. Usually, international students cannot work while in Quebec. However, recently, the Canadian government has allowed international students to work off campus on a part-time basis. This new regulation only applies to students registered in Quebec universities located outside major cities, such as the Université de Sherbrooke.

To be admissible to this program, you must hold a valid student permit and have completed two consecutive full-time study terms in Canada. Some restrictions apply. Students are expected to find off campus employment on their own without university assistance.

Restrictions Regarding Paid Work Terms

Owing to the nature of the coop system, which alternates study terms at the university and paid work terms in businesses or government organizations, foreign admission candidates must include an official document confirming their permanent resident status in Canada. If no such proof can be provided, admission will be assessed in terms of a comparable program offered within the regular system, if such a program exists.
