Domaines d'expertises et de recherche

Génie civil, génie des matériaux et des structures. Matériaux composites avancés de polymères renforcés de fibres (PRF). Développement, recherche et innovation sur la technologie d’armature, de tendons et de lamelles de PRF  pour les infrastructures en béton. Établissement de protocoles d’essais de caractérisation et de prédiction de la durée de vie des PRF.  Évaluation du comportement à long terme et durabilité des renforcements de PRF. Essais de conformité de barres d’armature,  de lamelles, plaques et tissus imprégnés de PRF. Essais sur des structures pleine grandeur en béton armé de PRF (poutres, dalles, colonnes, murs, pieux) sous charges statiques et cycliques. Conception et analyse d’ouvrages en béton renforcé de PRF pour une durée de service de plus de 100 ans (ex. : ponts, viaducs, stationnements étagés, tunnels). Application des PRF dans des ouvrages sur le terrain. Développement de normes de conception pour les structures en béton renforcé de PRF. Activités de recherche

  • Caractérisation physique et mécanique des matériaux composites de polymères renforcés de fibres (PRF) pour les structures de génie civil. Développement de nouvelles méthodes d’essais et critères de performance.  Développement de nouveaux produits de PRF plus performants. Critères d’exigences et certification.
  • Renforcement et réhabilitation de structures à l’aide de matériaux composites de PRF.
  • Études sur les propriétés à court et à long terme des armatures de flexion et de cisaillement en matériaux composites pour les structures en béton.
  • Évaluation de la durabilité des renforcements en matériaux composites de PRF sous sollicitations mécaniques et environnementales variées.  Performance des armatures en matériaux composites soumises à des environnements d’application extrêmes (milieu alcalin, températures, charges cycliques, etc.).
  • Études expérimentales et modélisation du comportement de membrures en béton armé avec des barres et étriers en matériaux composites de PRF (poutres, dalles, colonnes, murs, etc.) sous différentes conditions de chargement. Développement de lois de comportement et d’outils numériques.

Notice académique

Le Pr Brahim Benmokrane est un ingénieur-chercheur de renommée mondiale dans la conception et l’utilisation des matériaux composites de polymère renforcé de fibre (PRF) pour la construction. Ses recherches originales ont permis de concevoir des façons novatrices d’utiliser les matériaux composites de fibre de verre et de fibre de carbone pour renforcer le béton plutôt que d’utiliser des tiges d’acier classiques, éliminant ainsi la détérioration des infrastructures. Depuis vingt-cinq ans, le professeur Benmokrane a consacré toutes ses énergies à créer ces matériaux innovants utilisés à travers le monde. Prix et récompenses jalonnent son cheminement, comme en témoignent les nombreux reportages médiatiques sur son parcours.  Parcours parsemé de plusieurs reconnaissances, dont six exemples marquants : il a été intronisé membre de la Société royale du Canada en reconnaissance de ses contributions exceptionnelles à la vie intellectuelle du Canada; lors du congrès international CONMAT'15 The Fifth International Conference on Construction Materials: Performance, Innovations and Structural Implications, le Prix hommage «Life-Time Achievements» lui a été décerné par ses pairs pour ses réalisations en recherche et développement dans le domaine des matériaux pour la construction; il a reçu le Prix Synergie pour l’Innovation du CRSNG, appuyé d’un montant de 200,000$, soit le plus gros montant reçu pour un prix par un professeur-chercheur de l’Université de Sherbrooke; l’Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) lui a décerné le Grand Prix d’excellence soit la plus haute distinction de l’Ordre; le Prix P.L. Pratley que la Société canadienne de génie civil (SCGC) lui a décerné pour le meilleur article scientifique dans le domaine de l’ingénierie des ponts; la Médaille Julian C. Smith de l’Institut Canadien des Ingénieurs en reconnaissance pour le développement du Canada, la Médaille de l’ International Institute for Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) for Construction (IIFC) - la plus haute distinction attribuée par cet institut international à un de ses membres -  en reconnaissance d’un leadership et de contributions scientifiques  exceptionnelles dans le domaine des matériaux composites de PRF pour les infrastructures et la construction et il a reçu la Médaille du Mérite de la Canadian Standard Association (CSA) en reconnaissance d’un leadership et d’une contribution exceptionnels, ainsi que des efforts inlassables dans le développement de normes et codes en matériaux et structures de construction, à la fois sur les plans national et international.  Le Pr Benmokrane est invité partout dans le monde comme conférencier dans des organisations professionnelles et des institutions académiques et il siège sur des comités scientifiques et éditoriaux internationaux de premier plan. Directeur du centre de recherche de l’Université de Sherbrooke sur les matériaux composites pour les structures (CRUSMAC) et titulaire d’une chaire de recherche du Canada de niveau 1 et d’une chaire de recherche du CRSNG, le professeur est reconnu tant par ses pairs que par l’industrie au Canada et au monde comme le chef de file mondial dans son domaine de recherche. Il a développé le plus grand laboratoire de recherche au monde dans le domaine des armatures en PRF pour les structures en béton et son travail fait rayonner le génie québécois et canadien à l’étranger. Au cours des 25 dernières années, il a formé plus de 155 chercheurs dans ses laboratoires de recherche et a publié plus de 550 articles scientifiques. Il est l’un des scientifiques les plus cités au monde dans le domaine de recherche (7970 citations, h-index = 48, i10 index = 152 par Google Scholar en date du 30 octobre 2018). Titulaire d’un diplôme d’ingénieur de l’École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (1979), le Pr Benmokrane a obtenu sa maîtrise en sciences appliquées de l’Université de Sherbrooke en 1983 et son doctorat en 1986. Il est professeur au Département de génie civil de la Faculté de génie de l’Université de Sherbrooke depuis 1992.

Résumé de transfert de technologie

  • Le Pr Benmokrane et son groupe de recherche ont développé de nouvelles armatures en matériaux composites de PRF durables et non sujettes à la corrosion électrochimique (fibres de verre, de carbone ou de basalte) pour les structures en béton avec l’industrie tels que des armatures aux propriétés de durabilité et mécaniques améliorées, des armatures avec tête d’ancrage, des étriers et des spirales actuellement utilisés au Canada et exportés dans plusieurs pays.
  • Le Pr Benmokrane a développé le plus grand laboratoire de recherche au monde dans le domaine des armatures en PRF pour les structures en béton qui est reconnu pour son expertise unique. Du transfert de technologie est réalisé avec plusieurs entreprises canadiennes et internationales.
  • Le Pr Benmokrane et les membres de son groupe de recherche sont à l’origine de méthodes d’essai innovantes et de nouvelles procédures de vieillissement afin d’évaluer les propriétés à long terme des barres d’armature en matériaux composites qui ont été adoptées par les normes canadiennes, américaines et dans d’autres pays.
  • Ses recherches pionnières sur la durabilité des armatures en fibre de verre pour les structures de béton ont conduit à l’acceptation de ce nouveau matériau de construction comme armature principale dans l’édition de 2006 du Code canadien sur le calcul des ponts routiers.
  • Le Pr Benmokrane a développé la première norme au monde sur l’homologation des barres d’armature en matériaux composites (norme CSA S807) qui est utilisée par plusieurs manufacturiers organismes gouvernementaux canadiens. Cette norme a inspiré plusieurs autres à travers le monde.  
  • Les recherches sur le comportement structural de membrures en béton armé de PRF du Pr Benmokrane et les chercheurs de son groupe ont contribué de façon majeure au développement de nouveaux modèles de calcul et de nouveaux codes de conception canadiens et internationaux.
  • Le professeur Benmokrane et les membres de son groupe ont développé de nouveaux types de glissières de sécurité de ponts routiers plus durables et résistantes qui ont été incorporés au Code canadien sur le calcul des ponts routiers  en 2006 et sont maintenant utilisés à grande échelle au Canada.
  • Durant les 20 dernières années, le Pr Benmokrane a travaillé avec des firmes d’ingénieries, des ministères et des maitres d’ouvrages canadiens et internationaux et a réalisé plusieurs premières mondiales de ponts, viaducs, stationnements multi-étagés, de chaussées d’autoroutes, tunnels, ouvrages maritimes, usines de traitement d’eau potable et quais portuaires.
  • Le Pr Benmokrane a contribué de façon majeure et a joué un rôle de premier plan au Canada et ailleurs au monde dans la préparation de premiers standards, codes et normes de calcul sur les structures en béton armé de PRF. Il est président-fondateur des comités techniques des normes CSA S807 et CSA S808 et vice-président des comités techniques de CSA S806 et CSA-S6. Ses résultats de recherche ont directement inspiré plusieurs normes et guides techniques internationaux (États-Unis, Europe, Asie, Australie).
  • Le Pr Benmokrane a présidé et organisé 5 conférences internationales au Québec dans son domaine de recherche qui ont attiré plus de 1000 chercheurs, ingénieurs et industriels du Canada et du reste du monde. Parallèlement et afin de promouvoir l’emploi de ces matériaux innovants dans la construction  d’infrastructures, le Pr Benmokrane a donné bénévolement, sous l’égide d’organismes professionnels (ex., SCGC, CSA, ACI, etc.), de nombreuses formations, cours intensifs, séminaires et ateliers à des centaines d’ingénieurs, de chercheurs et de professionnels partout au Canada.  Plus d’une cinquantaine de séminaires ont aussi été donnés par le Pr Benmokrane ailleurs dans le monde notamment aux États-Unis, en Europe, en Asie, en Australie, en Afrique et au Moyen-Orient. Ces formations portaient sur les propriétés de ces nouveaux matériaux composites structuraux, les principes de calcul et l’utilisation des nouveaux codes, normes, manuels et guides de calcul.  Il a également été conférencier invité à plus de 50 conférences nationales et internationales. Le professeur Benmokrane est également membre de comités éditoriaux de plusieurs revues scientifiques internationales et de comités de sélection de subventions et de bourses supérieures.
  • En 2011, le Pr Benmokrane a figuré parmi les 10 meilleurs chercheurs du Canada en sciences naturelles et en génie. La division des communications du CRSNG présente une vidéo intitulée « 2 minutes avec le professeur Brahim Benmokrane ». Ses travaux de recherche ont été le sujet de deux reportages à l’émission Découverte de la télévision de Radio-Canada, en 2003 et 2007 et d’un reportage à l’émission Le Code Chastenay de Télé-Québec, en 2012, et de nombreux articles de magazines et de journaux grand public canadiens et américains, en plus de reportages à la radio afin d’éclairer le public sur des enjeux en lien avec les infrastructures en Amérique du Nord et au  Québec et l’utilisation de technologies innovantes.. De 2008 à 2015, ses travaux font l’objet d’une exposition au Centre des Sciences de Montréal.
  • Le professeur Benmokrane est très actif au sein d’associations professionnelles canadiennes et internationales comme la Société canadienne de génie civil, le Bridge Engineering Institute, la Réunion internationale des laboratoires d’essais et de recherches sur les matériaux et les constructions,  l’American Composites Manufacturers Association, l’American Concrete Institute, l’American Society of Civil Engineers, l’American Society for Testing and Materials, l’International Association for Bridge and Structural engineering, l’International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure, et l’International Institute for Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRP) in Construction.
  • Le Pr Benmokrane a supervisé 44 étudiants à la maîtrise, 55 étudiants au doctorat et 35 stagiaires postdoctoraux en plus d’avoir eu dans ces laboratoires plus de 20 chercheurs internationaux invités. Plus de 25 étudiants formés occupent des postes de professeurs au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde. Plus de 30 étudiants des cycles supérieurs et stagiaires postdoctoraux formés par le professeur Benmokrane occupent des postes de professeurs dans des universités Canadiennes et à l’étranger. Il dirige présentement un groupe de recherche constitué de 31 personnes incluant 26 étudiants aux cycles supérieurs et stagiaires postdoctoraux dont plusieurs sont titulaires de bourses de Mitacs, du CRSNG ou du FQRNT.

Ils doivent être reconnus comme chefs de file internationaux dans leur domaine et doivent être considérés comme exceptionnels par rapport à leurs pairs de recherche.  Cette chaire financée par le CRSNG a été attribuée en 2000 pour une durée initiale de cinq ans (2000-2005), puis a été reconduite pour un second mandat (2005-2010), un troisième mandat (2010-2015) et un quatrième mandat (mandat en cours: 2015-2020). Le renouvellement pour un quatrième mandat de 5 ans constitue une première au Canada.

Participation dans des comités techniques d’élaboration de normes de calcul de structures et de matériaux de  construction

Le Professeur Benmokrane a contribué de façon majeure et a joué un rôle de premier plan au Canada dans la préparation de premiers standards, codes et normes de calcul relatifs aux renforcements en matériaux composites et leur utilisation en construction. Le candidat est président des comités techniques des normes CSA S807 et CSA S808 et vice-président des comités techniques de CSA S806 et CSA S6. Le candidat a aussi contribué de façon majeure au niveau international dans la rédaction de normes (ACI, ASTM, fib, etc.).

  • Président-Fondateur : Comité technique de la norme CAN/CSA-S808 « Specification for Fibre-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) Materials for Externally Reinforcing Structures», Canadian Standards Association (CSA), 2012 –. Ce comité technique a produit en 2014 une première norme au monde (CAN/CSA S808-14) portant  les caractéristiques techniques, la fabrication et les essais d’homologation sur les produits en matériaux composites de PRF pour leur utilisation comme renforcement externe de structures existantes.
  • Président-Fondateur : Comité technique de la norme CAN/CSA-S807 « Specification for Fibre-Reinforced Polymers as Internal Reinforcement for Concrete structures», Canadian Standards Association (CSA), 2008 –. Une première norme au Canada (CAN/CSA S807-10) portant les caractéristiques techniques, les constituants, la fabrication et les essais d’homologation des barres d’armature en en PRF pour les structures en béton a été produite par ce comité technique et publiée en 2010. Activités d'enseignement

Cours dispensés: 1) Statique; 2) Résistance des matériaux; 3) Matériaux composites en construction et réhabilitation de structures comprenant : 3.1) le calcul de membrures en béton armé avec des barres en matériaux composites de PRF, conformément aux normes CAN/CSA-S6 et CAN/CSA-S806; et 3.2) le calcul et conception de membrures en béton réhabilitées à l’aide de matériaux composites de PRF conformément aux normes CSA-S6 et CSA-S806; 4) Projets de spécialité et encadrement de projets étudiants de 1er cycle crédités dans le domaine des matériaux et génie des structures.

Les étudiants du 1er cycle du cours sur les «Matériaux composites en construction et réhabilitation de structures » dispensé par le Pr Benmokrane ont gagné à trois reprises (en 2011, 2009 et 2003) des prix dans le concours international organisé par l’American Concrete Institute (ACI 440 FRP Composite Competition) qui réunit plus de 50 universités nord-américaines (Canada, USA et Amérique du Sud). Le Pr Benmokrane a été le premier Pr au Canada à offrir ce cours en 1998 aux étudiants de 1er, 2e, et 3e cycles au Département de génie civil de l’Université de Sherbrooke. Projets de spécialité et encadrement de projets étudiants de 1er cycle crédités dans le domaine des matériaux et génie des structures.

Supervision de thèses et mémoires de maîtrises d’étudiants gradués :

Un des objectifs les plus importants du Pr Benmokrane est la formation de personnels spécialisés extrêmement compétents et leur placement dans des institutions de recherche, des établissements académiques et des organismes des secteurs publics et privés. Depuis le début de sa carrière professorale à l’Université de Sherbrooke, le Pr Benmokrane a supervisé 44 étudiants à la maîtrise, 55 étudiants au doctorat, 35 chercheurs postdoctoraux et 20 professionnels et techniciens en recherche pour un total de 154. Plusieurs d’entre eux ont poursuivi une carrière académique, une carrière en recherche ou une carrière en industrie au Québec, au Canada et à travers le monde.  Plus de 25 étudiants gradués et stagiaires postdoctoraux formés occupent des postes de professeurs dans des universités au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et ailleurs dans le monde.
