The simulation of quantum systems on a quantum computer generally requires the use of the Trotter approximation to translate the time evolution into a quantum circuit. This approximation leads to an error that depends on the Hamiltonian of the system and the initial state. Although the error increases with the duration of the evolution, it is possible to get around this problem by performing several shorter evolutions. To control the error of a quantum evolution simulation, we generally try to limit it. In practice, these bounds are typically very permissive.
In this project, we have developed an approach based on measuring the initial quantum state to estimate the magnitude of the Trotter error.
