Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS) and Xanadu are teaming up to create a talent stream of highly skilled professionals in Canada’s quantum technologies sector. This partnership will provide UdeS students with quantum computing educational material utilizing software and hardware developed by Xanadu, equipping students for careers in the quantum computing field. As both parties are dedicated to advancing the field of quantum information science, they will also work on identifying cooperative research and educational projects. The collaboration is especially timely in light of the National Quantum Strategy, which was announced in January and includes talent as one of three pillars to strengthen Canada’s position in the quantum field, as well as the Sherbrooke Quantum Innovation Zone, which was announced by Québec Prime Minister in February 2022.

UdeS has long been at the forefront of quantum research, thanks to the Institut Quantique, and is now offering a new Bachelor degree in quantum information sciences, the first of the French-speaking world. This multidisciplinary program provides students with a solid base in quantum software development, covering topics from algorithm design to mechanics of quantum systems.

“Multiplying collaborations with industry partners such as Xanadu will help further enrich the program, allowing students to gain practical, hands-on experience and providing them with the latest advancements in the quantum computing and quantum software, as well as a competitive edge in the job market” said Nancy Dumais, Associate Dean of Education and Inclusion at the Faculty of Sciences.

Xanadu, the world leader in photonic quantum computing, has a strong commitment to developing and providing educational material as well as training and supporting quantum professionals. With this partnership, Xanadu will offer UdeS students introductory content leveraging tools like PennyLane, Xanadu’s open-source software library for quantum computing, as well as access to their quantum devices through the Xanadu Quantum Cloud.

“We are excited to be partnering with Université de Sherbrooke to provide students with access to cutting edge quantum technologies and training. We believe this gives students a unique advantage in the increasingly competitive quantum landscape and we look forward to continuing to contribute to the thriving quantum ecosystem in Canada” said Jen Dodd, Xanadu Quantum Community Lead.
