Call for proposals

In response to the call for proposals under the Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Program, the Université de Sherbrooke (UdeS), one of the greatest research universities in Canada, is seeking candidatures to fill a position for a Tier 1 CRC.

This call for proposals is aimed at both current UdeS professors and external candidates. This Chair relates to the unifying theme Innovative Materials / Processes and Quantum Science identified by the UdeS. It will be attached to either the Faculty of Engineering or the Faculty of Science.

The Chairholder’s home faculty shall be determined based on their expertise and the direction of their research program.

Profile desired

The candidates’ main field of expertise must deal with the unifying theme Innovative Materials / Processes and Quantum Science identified by the UdeS. The CRC Program was established by the Government of Canada to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds.

The candidates sought are exceptional, world-class researchers recognized by their peers for their achievements in their field. The candidates must propose a promising, innovative research program of the highest quality, while demonstrating interest and competency in teaching.

The successful candidate will be selected by a selection committee according to the following criteria:

• Scientific relevance of the proposal;
• Structuring impact of the proposal with respect to the research themes of the UdeS and its programs;
• Candidate’s match with the orientations of the UdeS;
• Given the pool of potential candidates, the person’s contribution to achieving institutional targets regarding equity and diversity, in particular for designated groups under the Employment Equity Act;
• Compliance with the selection criteria for Tier 1 CRC.

Career interuptions

Main duties

• Teach at all graduate and undergraduate levels.
• Supervise graduate and doctoral students.
• Develop fundamental and applied research activities.
• Take part in university life.
• Contribute to community service.

Qualifications

• Doctorate in a relevant discipline.
• Compliance with the requirements of the Tier 1 CRC Program.
• Strong interest in and aptitude for teaching and university pedagogy as well as research, development and innovation.
• Good ability to supervise graduate students.
• Solid and internationally recognized research experience.
• Publication record in international peer-reviewed journals, attesting to the excellence of the research record.
• Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relations, work collaboratively and be a team player.
• Leadership qualities, initiative, and excellent abilities to communicate and interact effectively and harmoniously with internal and external partners.
• Ability to teach in French or to achieve this ability promptly.
• Experience in interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary research and in knowledge transfer will be considered an asset.
• Candidates for a Tier 1 Chair must be full professors or associate professors or be qualified to become full professors within two years of nomination.
• Candidates wishing to be attached to the Faculty of Engineering must be members of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ) or have the required qualifications to become members and be committed to do so as soon as possible.

Labor conditions

Regular, full-time position.

The term of the Tier 1 Chair is seven years and is renewable once for another period of seven years after examination of the incumbent’s record. The appointment is subject to assessment and final approval by the CRC Program.
