GreenMetric Ranking 2019
UdeS holds onto top spot in Canada thanks to the sustained effort of its community
Sherbrooke, le 11 décembre 2019 – Again ranked first in Canada in sustainable development, the Université de Sherbrooke has also ranked 22nd in the world among the 780 universities from 87 countries that participated in the 2019 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.
This performance is truly noteworthy as, despite increased participation in the rankings this year, the Université de Sherbrooke held onto its global and national spot in this annual initiative that promotes collaboration between institutions and continuous improvement in environmental performance. Six Canadian universities also made the world’s top 100 this year.
In the overall ranking, UdeS received 8175 points out of a possible 10,000 thanks to remarkable performance in all sectors analyzed. “Our 2018-2022 Sustainable Development Plan is an important component of this success and helps our entire university community apply these principles. Our number-one position in Canada is the result of collective action, and we can all be very proud of this recognition of our effort,” said Professor Denyse Rémillard, Vice-Rector, Administration and Sustainable Development.
Concrete action for green and eco-conscious campuses
At UdeS, sustainable development is concretely intertwined with university management. Some of the tangible results that helped UdeS stand out include waste management, as the university community's commitment has diverted 72% of waste from landfills; water conservation measures implemented since the 2000s, which have reduced water consumption by over 50%; and our energy efficiency program, which has reduced the energy intensity of the university’s buildings by 40%.
The program to give free access to public transit to UdeS students, the new program to let staff access public transit, measures to improve inter-campus travel, the installation of charging stations, and many support measures for active transportation are also part of the University's cocktail of sustainable mobility measures that were recognized in the GreenMetric ranking.
The 2019 ranking also accounts for educational activities related to the environment and sustainable development, the engagement of the UdeS community of researchers in these areas, along with many initiatives and projects developed by the student community.
