T cells confer protection against pathogens. Sometimes, they can cause autoimmune diseases. Within T cells, several proteins regulate apoptosis, some induce cell death while others promote cell survival. Research in my lab is focused on how one protein, GIMAP5 functions to prevent cell death in T cells. Other research projects are aimed at validating new immunotherapies for autoimmune diabetes and understanding the role of chronic inflammation in obesity and the related metabolic syndromes.
