In 2026, the Université de Sherbrooke Cancer Research Institute (IRCUS) is celebrating its 5th anniversary by highlighting the richness and commitment of its community. Throughout The Faces of IRCUS series, you will meet the people who are helping to transform hope into tangible progress for people affected by cancer.

Today, meet Véronique Giroux, Professor and Researcher at IRCUS and a member of its Executive Committee.

Professor Véronique Giroux earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmacology from the Université de Sherbrooke in 2005, followed by a master’s degree in cell biology in 2007 and a PhD in the same field in 2013, also from the Université de Sherbrooke. Her research at the time focused on the role of estrogens in colorectal cancer. During her postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, she developed expertise in stem cells in the context of esophageal cancer, as well as in organoid models.

What led you to your current role at IRCUS, and what does your work involve today?

I was recruited in 2018 as an assistant professor at the Université de Sherbrooke to develop my research program aimed at determining the role of stem cells in diseases affecting the digestive system, including esophageal cancer and colorectal cancer. I joined IRCUS as a Professor and Researcher in 2021 at the time of its creation.

What role have you played since IRCUS was founded?

In addition to being a Professor and Researcher at IRCUS since its creation, I have been a member of the Executive Committee since 2024. I have also been supporting student and research professional members of the IRCUS Scientific and Social Engagement Committee (CASSI) since 2023 in organizing their activities.

What motivated you to get involved with IRCUS?

Being involved with IRCUS is very important to me for many reasons. First, because I dedicate my professional career to advancing cancer research. Second, because I place great importance on mentoring the next generation of scientists and enjoy engaging with students. Finally, because one of my close friends, as well as several members of my family—including aunts, uncles, and grandmothers—faced or are currently facing this disease. I believe it is important to contribute, in my own way, for them and for the people who will receive a cancer diagnosis in the future.

What event or person at IRCUS has made a significant impact on you?

The Cyclo-Walk Classic Sherbrooke, held every September, represents a particularly meaningful moment for me each year. It is an opportunity for researchers, students, clinical teams, as well as patients and their loved ones to come together. Through this event, the Institute and my commitment to it truly take on their full meaning.

Can you tell us a touching or memorable anecdote from your time at IRCUS?

During a speed-networking event organized by IRCUS, I had the opportunity to meet several patients and to put a face, a reality, to what we do in our profession. It is always very inspiring. I ran into one of these patients a few months later, and we discovered that her daughter teaches dance to my daughter. I now see her almost every Saturday. ❤️

How do you see IRCUS evolving over the next five years?

In my opinion, IRCUS will shine at the national level as an institute that promotes diverse cancer research and builds on each individual’s strengths.

What has IRCUS let you express, experience or build?

IRCUS allows me, on a daily basis, to work with the next generation of scientists—young researchers who inspire me to give my best and to continue working to better understand this disease that affects us all, directly or indirectly. It also allows me to meet wonderful people during IRCUS Open House events, which gives us renewed energy, because what we do every day is for them. Despite the illness, treatments, and fatigue, they take the time to come and meet us.

Which achievement related to your work at IRCUS would make you the proudest?

That the research work we carry out in the laboratory will one day have a direct impact on the treatments offered to patients.

The 5th anniversary of IRCUS is not only a time to look back on the path we have taken but also the beginning of a new chapter in which researchers, the community, and partners come together to transform the future of cancer. Together, let’s keep building a world where every discovery brings us closer to a cure and every act of support helps save lives.
