Centre of Excellence in Information Engineering (CEGI)

On June 11, 2007, the Université de Sherbrooke announced the establishment of a second building in its Innovation Park: the Centre d'excellence en génie de l'information (Centre of Excellence in Information Engineering) (CEGI).

Construction of the $24.7M facility is scheduled to start in the fall of 2009. The CEGI will offer an interdisciplinary research environment, unique in Canada, specializing notably in tele-health and support technologies for health services.

Two-thirds of the 5735-m2 building will be reserved for university research and one-third for joint projects involving university researchers and industry.

The CEGI will respond to industry needs through a research model that simultaneously investigates innovative sensors and telecommunication technologies, as well as concrete applications for signal and information processing.

Three projects are already well beyond the developmental stage: tele-supervision of trauma surgery, robots for tele-presence in the home environment, and an integrated optical emitter applicable to software-defined radio applications.

The CEGI will bring together 156 people involved in six research chairs, three centres, four laboratories and one research team. Mobile robotics, intelligent systems, nanotechnologies, medical imagery, kinesiology as well as communication and networking tools are some of the areas of expertise involved.

This creative setting will offer graduate students an exceptional training environment for fundamental and applied research. The objective is to train 230 new master’s and doctoral students.
