Standards in Health Informatics Microprogramme
Targeted Clientele
The healthcare professionals, computer scientists and others who work in the health sector and who wish to develop competences in the selection, the interpretation and the application of standards.
Objectives
Allow students to :
- Understand the nature of standards used worldwide in the field of healthcare;
Understand the different processes leading to the creation and maintenance of standards; - Learn how to become involved in the standards community;
- Apply terminological standards to the work of healthcare professionals in order to evaluate and recommend the most relevant ones;
- Understand the importance of system architecture in the elaboration of a medical computer system and of the use of standards in order to ensure interoperability;
- Understand the importance of standardization and its impact on the healthcare sector;
- Know the main standards of HL7 and their fields of application;
Understand the different aspects of standardization through practical work.
Skills
By the end of the program, students will be able to :
- Understand the challenges and possible solutions for systems implementation in health informatics.
- Choose a set of standards for specific applications.
- Explain to users and system administrators the importance of standardizing.
- Understand how standards are organized and managed throughout their life cycle in Canada.
Admission
General Requirements
General admission requirements for graduate programs of the Université de Sherbrooke. (see Règlement des études, in French only)
Specific Requirements
The applicant must have an undergraduate degree in a field of study related to healthcare or, for some applicants, have education and work experience judged equivalent by the admissions committee.
Have at least two years of experience working in the field of healthcare.
To be involved or to be assigned for involvement in the implementation, or the management thereof, of computerized solution in the field of healthcare.

Course of study
The microprogramme consists of five courses for a total of nine credits. Course ISA 201 is a prerequisite for the other courses. The other four courses must be taken consecutively.
